Use (Verwendung)
We use this / that / these / those to show where an object or a person is from the perspective of the speaker, e.g. Who are those people over there?
Wir benutzen dies / der da/die da / diese / jene, um anzuzeigen, wo sich ein Objekt befindet (ausgehend von der Perspektive des Sprechenden), z.B. „Wer sind jene Menschen dort drüben?“
Form
this – a singular person or object near the speaker
dies – eine einzelne Person/ein einzelnes Objekt in der Nähe des Sprechenden
these – plural people or objects near the speaker
diese – mehrere Personen/Objekte in der Nähe des Sprechenden
that – a singular person or object further away from the speaker
der da/die da/das da – eine einzelne Person/ein einzelnes Objekt weiter entfernt vom Sprechenden
those – people or objects further away from the speaker
jene – mehrere Personen/Objekte weiter entfernt vom Sprechenden
Positive Sentences (bejahte Sätze)
near to the speaker – In der Nähe des Sprechenden
John, please look at this letter. (singular) – John, schau Dir bitte mal diesen Brief an.
John, please look at these pictures. (plural) – John, schau Dir bitte mal diese Photos an.
further away from the speaker – Weiter entfernt vom Sprechenden
John, look at that new car over there. (singular) – John, schau Dir mal das Auto dort drüben an.
John, look at those people over there. (plural) – John, schau Dir mal jene Menschen dort drüben an.
With the verb ‘to be’
this is – (dies (hier) ist)
these are – (diese (hier) sind)
that is – (der/die/das (dort) ist)
those are – (jene (dort) sind)
Negative Sentences (verneinte Sätze)
Negative sentences are formed with the verb ‘to be’ and ‘not’, e.g. That is not my bag.
Negative Sätze bildet man mit dem Verb “sein” und “nicht”, z.B. Das dort ist nicht meine Tasche.
Questions (Fragen)
Questions are formed by inverting this/that/these/those and the verb ‘to be’, e.g. John, is that your bag over there?
Fragen werden gebildet, in dem man dies/jenes/diese/jene und das Verb “sein” benutzt, z.B. John, ist das dort drüben Deine Tasche?
Short form (Kurzform)
The short forms (e.g. that isn’t / these aren’t) are normally used in speech and informal writing. The full forms (e.g. that is / these are) are normally used in formal writing.
Die Kurzformen (e.g. that isn’t / these aren’t) werden normalerweise beim Sprechen und informellen Schriftverkehr verwendet. Die ausgeschriebenen Formen (e.g. this is / these are) werden normalerweise im formellen Schriftverkehr verwendet.
