Have you got the time? – Können Sie mir sagen, wie spät es ist?
Can you tell me the time please? – Können Sie mir die Uhrzeit sagen?

It’s 3 o’clock in the afternoon
What we cannot say in English: – Was wir nicht auf Englisch sagen können

It’s 15 o’clock

In English 06:30 is expressed as: – Auf Englisch ist 06:30:
half-past-six am
half six (Die Engländer lassen gerne das `past`weg, es ist aber halb sieben)
six-thirty am

05:15 can be expressed in two ways:
(a) quarter past five am
five-fifteen am

What time is it?

19:45 can be expressed in two ways:
(a) quarter to eight pm
eight forty-five pm

We suggest speaking times as follows because it is easier to understand:
Wir schlagen vor, die Zeiten so zu nennen, da es leicht verständlich ist:
19:00 – 7 pm
17:05 – five oh five pm
08:25 – eight twenty-five am
11:30 – eleven thirty am
10:35 – ten thirty-five am
16:55 – four fifty-five pm
