The British write the date in the same format as in German:

The Americans write the month first:
MM/DD/YYYY

June 5, 2009
Our tip is to write the date in full so there is no misunderstanding

the sixth of May two thousand and nine
Remember to use ordinal numbers when saying the date (first, second etc).
