Modal verbs – May I speak to Mr Schmidt?

Modal verbs help other verbs and are used to change the mood of a verb, express the speaker’s attitude and judgment of an event. They can have more than one meaning. The behaviour of modal verbs is different from normal verbs. The –s ending for the third person in the present simple does not apply. We always use an infinitive after a modal verb,
e.g. I might go to the meeting. He might go to the meeting.

Modalverben haben die grammatische Funktion von Hilfsverben und werden verwendet um den Modus eines Verbs zu ändern. Sie drücken die Einstellung und Meinung des Sprechers zu einem Ereignis aus. Sie haben meist mehrere Bedeutungen. Ein Modalverb verhält sich anders als normale Verben. Die Endung -s in der dritten Person Singular im Present simple wird nicht verwendet. Nach einem Modalverb wird immer ein Infinitiv gebraucht,
z.B. I might go to the meeting. (“Ich gehe vielleicht zu der Besprechung.”). He might go to the meeting. (“Er geht vielleicht zu der Besprechung.”).
