Make & do – I always do my English homework!

We use the verb to make to describe physical production or preparation,
e.g. to make a cup of coffee.
We can also use the verb to make to describe communication,
e.g. to make a telephone call.

Das Verb to make wird gebraucht um Vorgänge auszudrücken, die besagen, dass etwas hergestellt oder erarbeitet wird.
z.B. to make a cup of coffee (“einen Tasse Kaffee machen.”)
To make kann auch gebraucht werden, um Kommunikationsformen zu beschreiben,
z.B. to make a telephone call (“einen Telefonanruf machen.”).

We use the verb to do to describe activities,
e.g. to do homework

Das Verb to do wird gebraucht um Aktivitäten zu beschreiben,
z.B. to do homework (“Hausaufgaben machen”).

Be careful not to translate the German verb “machen” directly as to make in English. ‘To make homework’ is wrong. ‘To do homework’ is correct because it is an activity and not a form of production.

Vorsicht: das deutsche Verb machen nicht “1:1” mit “to make” ins Englische übersetzten wird! To make homework für “Hausaufgaben machen” ist falsch. To do homework ist richtig, denn es ist eine Aktivität und keine Form der Herstellung.
