Use
English uses modal verbs like can, could and would and other expressions to make questions sound a little more polite.
This is not necessary in German because direct questions are perfectly okay.
Example:
Geben Sie mir Ihren Name bitte. – (In German this is OK)
Give me your name please. – (In English this is very direct)
Form
Try to use phrases like:
Can you give me your name please? (Können Sie…)
Could you give me your name please? (Könnten Sie…)
Would you give me your name please? (Würden Sie…)
Would you mind giving me your name please? (Würden Sie…)
I don’t suppose you would mind giving me your name please? (ein vorsichtiges „Würden Sie…)
Note: mind + -ing
